The XML parser in Windows Mobile 5.0 is more strict than in previous versions. If the parser considers the XML for the homescreen XML to be invalid, the homescreen does not load. The most common cause for homescreens to be considered invalid on Windows Mobile 5.0, but not previous versions, is the whitespace at the beginning of the file.
