Why does p.iv of the prelims say copyright for next year when the book is being published this year – has publication slipped?
Not necessarily. If a book is published in the last quarter of a year then we usually put next year’s date to ensure it does not look immediately out of date. For example, if someone picks up a book in the bookshop in December 2009 and sees the publication date as 2009, they may think ‘oh it could be 12 months old already’, whereas if they see a 2010 date, they will know that it has only just published within the last three months.
