Even with budget cuts and transfers, with the negative financial effect of declining enrollment and cuts from the State, the District is projected to be $2.8 million below its required 3% reserve at the end of the school year 2011 (The State requires the District to show this measure of fiscal solvency for three years out). Currently the District has several schools that are not operating at capacity. Closing schools allows the District to save substantial, on-going budget dollars, as well as provide a wider variety of programs to more students in a more efficient manner. The District will continue all efforts to economize and become more efficient in its operations, but with the number of students the District has lost, school consolidation is the next step for the District. What is the cost savings of closing a school? The District estimates at least a $500,000 savings to close an elementary school.
