Why does the legislation require that individuals and couples seeking infertility treatment have a Criminal (Police) Record Check and Child Protection Order Check?
The main concept underpinning much of the ART legislation is ‘the best interests of the child’. There was a strong lobby group who believed that an important way to protect the best interests of the unborn child was to require that patients undergo these checks prior to receiving treatment. Whilst Melbourne IVF does not agree with these requirements in the legislation and have argued strongly against them, Melbourne IVF are required to ensure compliance with the legislation. If you would like to express your concerns regarding these requirements in the legislation, please contact your local member for parliament, or you may consider contacting ACCESS, the national infertility network via their website, www.access.org.au, who actively campaign for the rights of patients undergoing treatment in Victoria.
