Why does the priest wear purple during Advent?
Priests wear purple during advent and lent as a sign of penance which they represent, being a preparation for Christmas and easter respectively. The 4 weeks (advent) and 40 days (lent) help us in preparing for the two greatest “celebrations” in the Roman Catholic calendar and invite us to repent for our sins and reconcile with Our Lord. The priests wears rose vestments only in the 3rd week of advent (even the candle in the wreath is rose-coloured) Gaudete Sunday and the 4th week of Lent (called Laudete Sunday).
