Why does the Security Service need a new headquarters in Northern Ireland if the threat from home-grown terrorism is diminishing?
The Service’s new headquarters at Loughside, Palace Barracks, Holywood, brings together staff who previously worked in a variety of locations across Northern Ireland.Loughside was established in addition to a network of nine regional stations around the UK, which the Service began to establish from 2005 onwards in response to the nationwide threat from international terrorism. It provides a possible contingency fall-back location if our London headquarters is unavailable for use. The building was formally opened by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland on 4 December 2007.
