Why does the VAS use Flat, Zero-Distortion Optics?

Few people realize the issues of distortion in many submarines. Most subs use curved domes or viewports which distort the natural beauty of the undersea world. This artificial optical image can also create a degree of vertigo and/or nausea with some submarine passengers. We use large flat, distortion-free optics in all our submarines which translates into crystal clear vision for passengers of the VAS. Equally important, this perfect vision is crucial when utilizing manipulators and close quarter maneuvering, as there is no guesswork in gauging distance.
