Why doesn’t UNCW have an ROTC program?
The University of North Carolina Wilmington did have an Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program at one time, but it has been more than 10 years ago, college spokeswoman Dana Fischetti says. “At that time, there was not sufficient enrollment to sustain the program on our campus,” she said. “At this time, UNCW has chosen to focus its limited resources on building and strengthening relationships and programs with the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy through partnerships with Camp Lejeune and New River Air Station,” Fischetti says. That includes programs and services on site in Onslow County and programs and services for active duty and retired military personnel and their dependants on UNCW’s main campus in Wilmington, she says. There’s an anticipated influx of thousands of college-bound soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan in the coming years, a fact that UNCW administrators are well aware of. “UNCW is working to build the critical infrastructure necessary to be a major partner
