Why don't you use “browser sniffing” to serve pages that are optimized for my browser?
“Browser sniffing” was useful and practical at a time when there were only two widely used browsers (i.e., Netscape and Internet Explorer) and when no web standards existed. Today, there are web standards, as well as dozens of browsers incl. many on platforms other than PCs, e.g., mobile phones and PDAs. It is virtually impossible to test web pages on evey platform. The best chance to produce web content that is accessible by the widest variety of clients is to simply follow web standards.
