They are cool season plants but they do like sunshine, so on cloudy, rainy days they are not out in full bloom. Also, if it is below freezing they will rest and look like they are dying, leave them alone and soon as they get a little sun and the temperature gets in the 40’s you will again have colorful flowers. Why don’t they fill in as quickly as summer annuals? Pansies should be planted closer together than you would your annuals to get the best look in your beds. Remember they do best in 40 – 60 degree range and they don’t do well when it warms or when it freezes. Although they will not die because of these changes in temperatures, they won’t fill in as easily as summer annuals do. Just plant them a little closer. Why don't pansies last all year?
