Why don we British write a constitution down like the USA did?
The UK constitution is written, just not as a single document. There are many normal Acts of Parliament (laws) that are clearly constitutional acts. We are also a far older country than the USA and as our constitution has evolved over a thousand years from those of England, Scotland and more recently Great Britain, the current method is well established and has been tried and tested, surviving a very long test of time. As a previous poster said by being able to amend our constitution by a simple act of parliament we avoid getting stuck with archaic nonsense, such as the democratic value of “free persons” and “others” (slaves), or the need for a militia, which can be in force for decades before a massively high number of people vote for change. We can get rid of such things overnight, and though it doesn’t provide the same protection against limitations of rights, we have other methods of ensuring freedom from tyranny.
