Why elizabeth was disappointed when miss charlotte accepted Mr.Collins proposal?
Elizabeth was angry I think because she was very good friends with Charlotte, and thought she could do better. The family were disappointed because it meant that they would lose possession of the house when Mr Bennett died as he was the nearest male relative – and in those days all estates passed on to the nearest man in the family, they had no sons, so it went to a cousin.
3 reasons: 1- Lizzie has turned down the family being able to have their estate again upon her marrying Collins, which was a REALLY big problem for them. Pride and Prejudice is about economics as well as romance and society. 2 – Lizzie showed her pride by turning down Collins. The family was desperate to marry money – the eldest daughter was doing her best and then Lizzie messed up the Collins affair making the whole family seem prideful in the eyes of the neighbors 3 – Lizzie is so disappointed in her friend- the friend is older, even spinsterish and Lizzie knows that she is taking her last and probably only chance to be married. Recall that Lizzie is actually glad for her friend when she sees that after marriage, Charlotte maintains her own life as well as being a good wife to Collins. But for Lizzie’s family, their ENTIRE estate will now belong to their neighbors at the death of Father. This was tragedy in those times. People became poverty stricken overnight because of the arcane p
