“It is not an England ”soccer” team. we invented the game and we called it football, because you foot the ball, you don’t socc the ball.”

The name “soccer” is also English in origin.  It is a shortening of “Association”, as in “Association Football”, which the original name of the dribbling, no-hands code of football that is the direct ancestor of the modern game.  In fact, according to the football/soccer journalist Simon Kuper, the use of the word “soccer” was quite common in the UK well into the 20th century.

There are at least 7 forms of football in the world, and it is true that American football has its origins in the various football-type games developed in England in the 19th century.  But as the “gridiron” style of football became dominant in the US, this code naturally came to be referred to simply as “football”, while association football was referred to using the “Soccer” moniker explained earlier.  This is the same in other countries with different dominant codes of football; in Australia, the term “football” might as well refer to Aussie Rules.

It is therefore perfectly valid to use the name “soccer” when referring to the beautiful game. It is the most logical name, as only one sport can be called “soccer”, while several can be called “football”.  The rule I adopt is this – if I am in a country where “soccer” is the dominant football code and everyone calls it “football”, I call it football.  But if I am in a place such as the US, where the dominant football code is American football, I refer to the hands-free game as “soccer” so as to avoid all confusion.  No need to be snob and try to argue over which sport is the true football.

it is not an England ”soccer” team. we invented the game and we called it football, because you foot the ball, you don’t socc the ball. And i quote Alex K ” The game of football was invented in England. Although it is true China played games which involved feet and a ball, it was not even close to the game of football. They were merely games and activities that used a ball. For instance, American football can be seen as a variation of rugby, which is a variation of ”soccer” but with hands, and so you see you can trace all sports back to China really by this logic. But the Chinese did not invent football. The official game of football was invented in England. That’s why The Football Association is the earliest established one around. It is also why the laws of the game as well as international football affairs can only be changed on a majority vote involving half the votes from FIFA and half from all the associations within the United Kingdom.
