So when other countries wanted/needed to do business with English-speaking nations, they began learning English so they could communicate effectively. On a sidenote: French used to be the international language (i.e., the language of diplomacy). It was spoken by the educated upper-classes (and royals) in several non-French countries (including Britain and Russia) up until the early 20th century. Basically, it was considered to be the language of the sophisticated/educated classes. But after WII, when the U.S. emerged as an honest to goodness super power, French took a backseat to English and the rest, it seems, is history.
