Within the past decade the number of children diagnosed with Autism or Asperger’s syndrome has increased significantly; consequently, the need for qualified teachers in this specialized area has also increased significantly. In February 2003, the Florida Department of Education issued a memorandum informing all colleges and universities about the new Endorsement in Autism. The endorsement consists of 12 credits (four courses) beyond, or in addition to, a valid certificate in Exceptional Student Education (ESE). The endorsement in Autism may be added to a bachelor’s or master’s degree in ESE. Barry University has developed the four new courses needed for the endorsement in Autism and will offer a minimum of two courses each semester on the main campus in Miami Shores. Within two short semesters, you may complete the 12 credits needed to apply for the endorsement and qualify to teach students with Autism. The course numbers and titles are as follows: ESE 673: Nature and Needs of Students
