Almost everyone has heard of a bean bag chair. The chair that you’d try to sit on but you’d slide off into a heap on the floor, wondering how something that looked so innocent could be such a challenge. Bean bag chairs were a hugely popular form of furniture during the late 1960’s, early 1970’s and again in the mid 1990’s (about the same time the Pet Rock made a revival). Bean bag chairs are essentially made up of a fabric shell filled with small chunks of PVC pellets or Polystyrene beads, also known as Styrofoam, which are stiff and crushable. Everyone remembers bean bag chairs as being fun, but if you really think about it, they were kind of annoying and there was always a lump in the wrong place or wedged…uncomfortably. After only a couple of years use, the “beans” within a bean bag chair will become compressed and need to be refilled in order to bulk the chair back up.
