Why has an Indigenous Australian term like ‘Caring for Country been used to name a government program?
The government believes that this term is a clear description of what the Caring for our Country initiative is about. While the government is aware of concerns the use of this term has raised with some Indigenous stakeholders, it is important to remember that the name reflects the recognition of and respect for the way Indigenous people have wisely cared for land and sea country over a long time. Much of the consultation with Indigenous communities found that the use of this name for the initiative was encouraged.
