Why has the CRD implemented a bylaw to regulate maintenance of septic systems?
Ensuring septic systems are properly maintained will help protect our local water quality. Onsite sewage systems, also known as septic systems, are an effective treatment option when designed, installed and maintained properly. However, it is estimated that 20% of systems in the Capital Region are failing. Lack of maintenance, such as regular pump-outs, is the number one cause of failure. Ensuring regular maintenance of our region’s systems will help to prevent the public health risks and environmental degradation associated with poorly maintained onsite septic systems.
