It’s just better than windows for pretty much everything you could want; as long as you have the aptitude with computers required (but nowhere near as bad as using linux used to be!) and willingness to work at it to get it as you like it. Placing ubuntu on an external hard drive means that you can save (for example) your laptop’s internal hard drive for windows, allowing easy portability and lots of room for games and adobe CS4 products (neither of which work very well on linux).
