Why is an employment contract important?

The contract of employment is the cornerstone of the individual employment relationship in Canadian employment law. An employer that wishes to define with certainty the terms of employment should enter into written contracts of employment with its employees. This is particularly true if the employer wishes to define the length of employment and limit its obligations arising from the termination of employment.
