The Government has set a target of 10% of electricity coming from renewable sources by 2010 (The 2003 Energy White Paper), with an aspiration for this to double by 2020. The Waste Strategy published in May 2007 strongly supports using anaerobic digestion to treat food waste. Minister for Waste Joan Ruddock MP showed her support, describing the technology as “the way forward” (The Times Online, 19th August, 2008). Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has found that anaerobic digestion facilities can be situated successfully on light industrial sites within towns (letsrecycle.com, 25th May 2007).
