Why is CDPR re-evaluating the pyrethroids?
Under California’s Food and Agricultural Code section 12824, CDPR is required to re-evaluate registered pesticide products upon receipt of information indicating the use of a pesticide may have caused an unreasonable adverse effect to humans or the environment. The re-evaluation for pyrethroids was based on findings from monitoring surveys and toxicity studies that detected the presence of pyrethroid residues in aquatic sediments of from both agricultural and urban California waterways at levels considered potentially toxic to very sensitive sediment-dwelling organisms such as Hyalella azteca. Scientists and regulatory authorities often use these crustacean organisms as an indicator of water quality and environmental health in streams, lakes and other bodies of water.
