Why is goth ignored by the music media?
The music media aren’t there to reflect the current music scene; they exist to sell magazines and advertising space. Journalists like to see themselves as “discovering” new talent, rather than having talent evolve gradually from one genre to the next. Thus the music press won’t entertain the possibility that goth has slowly evolved into something new. They have to wait for the scene to die away so that they can “discover” it again. But goth hasn’t died away, so the press label goths as “hangers-on” who still listen to 80’s music- despite a wealth of new talent! This is where the Internet comes into its own. There are no editors to decide what’s “cool” and what’s not. You don’t need the approval of a record company boss to advertise your album. No-one can censor the letters page.
