Why is it bad luck to break a mirror?

0

There are many variations on the superstition and the explanations. Most of the origins have to do with the reflection in the mirror representing the soul and the soul being damaged in the breaking. It is unclear whether the bad luck follows directly from damage to the soul, or whether the soul is less capable – in its damaged state – of defending the breaker from misfortune. Many Romans believed every person was remade new every seven years. So if the damage was done to your soul today it would take seven years to be undamaged. Given the Romans beliefs regarding the role of their immortal self in defending their mortal life, it is at least likely that they believed their soul was less capable of defending them. In some forms, the superstition predates the Romans. It even predates breakable mirrors, all the way back to scrying pools. So this is one very long-lived superstition.

According to ancient beliefs, a mirror reflected the entity of your soul and when you stare at a mirror, you stare not only at your physical body, but your soul as well. When you break a mirror, you are basically “breaking your soul” and therefore, condeming yourself to 7 years of bad luck while your soul tried to repair itself and return to your body.

Ok Ill rephrase and answer my question. I meant, “Why is it believed to be bad luck to break a mirror?”. And the answer is that the Romans believed that mirrors had the power to capture part of your soul. Therefore, broken mirror means broken soul. The Romans also believed that the body renewed itself every 7 years and so it would take 7 years for your soul to become whole again. In the meantime you wouldn’t have a soul to protect you from spiritual evil and negativity and so would have 7 years of bad luck and unfortunate events. Of course it isn’t true, a mirror’s a mirror and a soul is debatable.

There are also a number of rituals which are said to counteract the bad luck created when you break a mirror. The entire mirror should be ground into dust. No reflection, no problem. Otherwise bury the pieces under a tree during a full moon. African slaves believed the bad luck could be washed away by placing the pieces in a river flowing in a southerly direction.
