By TJR Staff Over the past 22 months, Jefferson Parish has witnessed six top officials step down from their elected or appointed positions. While there are a number of threads that connect the ex-officials, one that continues rearing its ugly head is the River Birch landfill contract. As we all well know by now, U. S. Attorney Jim Letten has subpoenaed boxes of documents pertaining to River Birch, which is co-owned by Fred Heebe and his stepfather Albert Ward and is positioned to benefit from the parish’s landmark $160 million landfill contract. The parish already had a pre-existing legal agreement with Waste Management Inc. when the deal was sealed, but the public dump it operates is expected to fill up in two years or less. The newest landfill contract, awarded to River Birch, is now being reviewed by a third party on the parish level, in addition to the scrutiny coming down from the feds.
