WHY is light skin tone a traditional or a modern obsession in India?
Its a traditional obsession that continues to this day. When Aryans came to India first they were very white/fair complexioned people. As they settled in India the tropical Sun started working on their skins making it darker. They wanted to retain their original skin color which was pale but they couldn’t maintain it in their adopted land as the climatic conditions favored darker skins. So they have been continuing their struggle all through several tens of millenniums to retain their fair complexion. . Another factor that figured in this obsession was the fact that the original native Dravidian population of India were dark skinned. Aryans wanted to distinguish themselves from the Dravidians by staying fair complexioned. Dravidians at the same time wanted to improve their complexion to fairer shades. A lot of mixing of gene pools took place and a good portion of the Dravidians too bacame lighter complexioned. . The obsession for fairer skin tones continues to this day. Cosmetic compan
