Why is light uniformity important?
Uniformity is important in relation to task lighting to prevent the eye having to making involuntary accommodations for different levels whilst trying to focus. The additional visual stress caused by a lack uniformity (>0.7 minimum-average) in the task area will lead to premature fatigue. However a common design error is to then apply this principle of task uniformity across an entire floor area. This will result in a bland lighting effect and may waste a lot of energy. In fact only >0.2 min/max ratio is required as the lowest diversity recommendation for the main area space.
