Typically, in the western countries the organs for transplantation are obtained from brain-dead donors after their families give permission. However living Donor transplants are also being done there as there is widening disparity between availability and the demand. In India, the Cadaver or Brain dead Donor transplantation is at its infancy and will take time to develop. Our government originally passed The Human Organ Transplantation Act, 1994 which defines the procedural formality of Cadaver organ donation. There are lot of amendments to be made which will encourage this concept of Organ Donation. Till then the Living Donor Liver Transplant will be the main modality in our country.
