The International Mystery Writers’ Festival starts Wednesday and runs through August 16. The biggest mystery about the festival is where it’s being held: Owensboro, Kentucky. Excuse me? Furthermore, this would be the third Mystery Writers’ Festival held in Owensboro. How did Owensboro Kentucky become the mystery writers capital of the world? And it’s the International Mystery Writers, too. How about London, haunt of Jack the Ripper, or Chicago with Herman Mudgett or San Francisco with the Zodiac? But, no, it’s Owensboro Kentucky Has there ever even been a fictional mystery set there? Let’s see, Raymond Chandler? No. Dashiell Hammett?, No. Robert Parker? No. Tony Hillerman? No. Owensboro, says Wikipedia, “is the third-largest city in Kentucky and the county seat of Davies County. It’s located on U.S. Route 60, about 32 miles southeast of Evansville Indiana. ” That’s always a good sign, locating it in reference to another city of which few know the wheareabouts.
