WHy is pizza fattening although its ingredients are good for you?

Pizza doesn’t have to be fattening. It can be made very healthy, but most of the restaurant varieties are very high in fat.

Define fattening. For some people, it involves fat content, so the fattier cheeses and the meats often have a high fat content but you can always leave them out or just use less. For others, it’s the carbs and they don’t like the crust so they eat what’s on top or choose a very thin crust or one made from something else like zucchini or cauliflower. There are always methods to reduce or change the type of fat or calories you are eating. Something doesn’t have to be fattening if you eat just a little bit of it.

Most pizza has lots of grease. Cheese and most meat toppings can be fattening too, if the pizza has a lot of them.

Because of the crust! Carbs, carbs carbs! The average slice of pizza is the equal of at least two slices of bread if not three! In addition, some pizza sauces are pretty sweet meaning they have sugar added. Ingredients such as sausage, hamburger, bacon etc. are high calorie even though meat in general has no carbs. But if the meats are not top grade, they may have been cut with soy and other fillers which may contain carbs. More carbs more calories. Don’t deceive yourself that a veggie pizza is low calorie. While much lower in calories than the traditional pizza, it’s still high in calories because of the crust, sauce and cheeses. If you’re looking for low calorie pizza try Weight Watchers brand, or Slim Fast, Lean Cuisine etc. or find a recipe to make your own. Magazines like Healthy Living, Cooking Lean and others probably have one.
