Why is red wine a fountain of youth but white wine gets ignored?
The theory that red wine may extend life comes from laboratory experiments using resveratrol on simple animals, such as worms and flies, to extend their normally short lifespans. This chemical occurs naturally in the skin of grapes (where the pigments are also). Grape skins are included in making red wine, but discarded before making white wine. In any case, any life extension due to resveratrol remains theoretical. Numerous international studies over the past five decades have all pointed to the regular and moderate consumption of wine (of either color) as a major factor in extending human health and life. Mortality rates from cardiovascular disease and stroke go down dramatically for those who consume a glass or two of wine, three or four days a week. What surprises many people, is that all these studies showed non-drinkers had higher rates of mortality from strokes and cardiovascular problems than did moderate, regular drinkers. Heavy drinkers, including binge drinkers, on the other
