Redondo Peak, the “Father of All Northern Mountains,” is the most sacred mountain to the people of the Jemez Pueblo and many of the surrounding Native American pueblos. According to legend, the ancestors of the Jemez Indians lived in the Four Corners area, but were constantly challenged by a scarcity of food and water throughout their history there. Consequently, their gods told them to travel south to find a new place to live — one that was rich in resources. Specifically, the gods told them to follow an eagle, which would guide them to their new homeland. When the Jemez people came to the Jemez Mountains, they saw the outline of an eagle spanning the top of Redondo Peak, formed by a wide natural clearing of trees across the top one-third of the dome.
