Why is Saint Peter important to the Catholic Church?

In Matthew 16:18 it says that; Jesus spoke “And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” As the foundation (rock) of the church it was Simon Peter who lead the church in the earliest years after Jesus’ death. Peter is considered the first Pope (Father of the Christian Church).
