Although the Florida Keys are green year round, as I was lying on my bench chair looking at the boxwood tree outside my front door, I reveled in the new burst of verdant green sprouting from its tips. Not only joyful, but it’s as if the tree is actually growing toward me because I love to look at it. We have an assortment of Seussian tropical flowers here whose names I am slowly learning. Many are big and showy. We have these trees that grow purple flowers. We have something called the poinciana, with flowers that start off bright red in spring, and stay ’till the end of summer, by which time they have mellowed to a fluorescent orange. The tweeting and singing birds are marvelous. These are ordinary birds that can be found all along the east coast: Red-winged blackbirds, grackles, starlings, waxwings, cardinals, ring-necked doves, catbirds. Nothing too showy. No parrots, maca
