Why is St George, the patron saint of England, Turkish; couldn England find an English saint?
St George appeared to English soldiers at the Battle of Antioch in 1098 and the soldiers adopted him as their patron saint. King Richard I put the English army under the protection of St George when he was campaigning in the Holy Land in 1191-92. His appeal became widespread and a number of miracles where attributed to him, and by the end of the 14th century he was declared the Patron Saint of England. St George’s father was a Roman officer from Cappadocia, now in Turkey, so technically he was both Roman and Turkish, and his mother was from Palestine.
