Why is Swing (Lindy Hop) so popular?
First, hip-hop dancing and rap music are over twenty years old. The high school and college kids of today are looking for their own brand of music and dancing. The advent of new bands like the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, Big Bad Voodoo Daddies, Mighty Blue Kings and Indigo Swing provide the new music for this generation. The only dance that can fit this music is swing! Because most young people have a secret desire to engage in any activity which their parents find impossible understand, they relish the opportunity to couple up and swing to big band music. Most parents of today grew up in a period when the music and dance did not require a partner. In other words, in order to be truly revolutionary these young people have stumbled on to the dance of their grandparents. It is a real opportunity to show the young dancers that Louis Prima’s rendition of Jump, Jive and Wail was a hit 40 years before Brian Setzer’s version.
