Believe it or not, the guy who invented the flushable toilet was actually named JOHN CRAPPER. That's why it's called the john, and also why it's called the crapper.  more

Sir John Harington developed a flush toilet, or water closet, for Queen Elizabeth II in 1596. A bathroom is still referred to as a john in Sir John's remembrance.  more
