To understand why the Gospel of Barnabas, an account of Christ’s life allegedly written by Saint Barnabas, who lived in the first century AD, is not accepted as a canonical work by Christian churches, one must examine how the early Church compiled the New Testament. The New Testament contains a total of 27 books. These were selected from several hundred written works and testimonies on the life of Jesus Christ at the Council of Rome, in 382 AD, under the supervision of Pope Damasus I. The Council also decided on the contents of the Old Testament. The Gospel of Barnabas, however, was only discovered at a much later date and there are only two remaining manuscripts of this work, written in Italian and Spanish and dating back to the late Middle Ages. It is, however, unlikely that this text was written by Saint Barnabas. The most likely author was probably an Italian from the 14th century and, as such, the book is probably a medieval forgery with no connection to the first century Christia
