Why is the influence of African masks on Picassos painting significant to the development of Modern art?
Objectives: Upon completion of this lesson the student will: • be able to demonstrate some understanding of masks from a cultural point of view, and general mask making principles; • be able to describe the difference between utilitarian and fine art objects; • see mask making as a cross-cultural phenomenon; • demonstrate the ability to use selected Elements and Principles of design in a finished work; • be able to use the critiquing process; • use proper terminology to describe artwork; • be able to utilize the Elements and Principles of Design in order to communicate emotion in an art work; • be able to demonstrate basic understanding of the Cubist style; • be able to use the shifting perspectives utilized in the Cubist style; • demonstrate some basic understanding of the reasons why African art influenced Picasso’s work.
