Why is the periodic table organized by atomic number and not by the atomic mass?

The atomic number is equal to the number of protons which never changes for a particlular element. The atomic mass changes depending on the isotope. Remember that the atomic mass is an average number representing all isotopes of a particular element. No matter wahat the atomic mass, as long as the atomic number is the same we are dealing with the same element.
