Why is Virgo considered to be a mutable sign?
A mutable sign is a sign that comes at the end of a season, this symbolizes changeability and concession (cardinals begin [the seasons], fixed are in the middle and sustain things). The ancient ruler is Mercury, Virgo is his “nocturnal”/feminine/lesser house, except in Vedic/Jyotish astrology where Virgo is his Moolatrikona, greater house, though this is basically only to keep Mercury near the Sun (Leo). I’m of the belief that the asteroid Pallas is a better choice for ruler of Virgo than Mercury, Chiron or Vesta, but that’s for another discussion. Virgo is pretty solitary, self-effacing and workaholic in nature and skeptical/fearful of romance (Venus is in Fall in Virgo, meaning resisted or misunderstood).
