The U.S. has adopted traditions from all over the place. It seems we’re eager to pick up on things that are easy to advertise. Maybe I’m must being a cynic. People choose what they want to celebrate, and often it’s based on what their parents brought them up with. As more Americans born in other countries raise their kids with traditions like 12 Days, more of us will appreciate them. I had a friend whose wife was from Austria, where Christmas trees are bought Dec. 24th and decorated that night. So for their first Christmas, he and she did that. Many Europeans also traditionally put lit candles on their trees for a short time Christmas Eve and sang hymns and carols. Not a good idea if your tree isn’t fresh. So between those traditions of waiting until late before decorating, and the American way of having stores pushing Christmas decorations on us the day after Halloween, people are tired of it all by Jan. 1 and put everything away. That’s my guess. If we all started later and paid more
