Why limit lead and phthalates?
Children are susceptible to lead poisoning, which can cause behavioral problems, decreased intelligence, anemia, kidney problems and seizures. Extreme cases of exposure can result in coma or death. In 2007 and 2008, several million toys made in China were recalled in the U.S. because of dangerous lead content. Phthalates are added to plastic products to make them soft and pliable, and are often found in things that may wind up in young children’s mouths — rubber ducks, teething rings and soft bath books. They’re also in some baby lotions, powders and shampoos. Some scientists suspect that phthalates may cause developmental and reproductive problems, especially in young babies.
