WHY MINOR IN LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN STUDIES?
Latin American and Caribbean Studies is a value-added minor that will compliment and strengthen many major fields of study. Students will be exposed to the rich literary, historical, sociological, anthropological and cultural heritage of the Hispanic world. With rapidly changing demographics in the U.S. and particularly in Texas, Hispanics are fast becoming a vital presence in our society. There are currently 30 million Hispanics in the U.S. with a buying power of about $383 billion and expected to skyrocket to $1 trillion by 2050. By the year 2030, Hispanic school-age children are expected to number 16 million creating high demand for educators with Spanish language and cultural skills. Hispanic-owned businesses in the U.S. have seen a dramatic increase. NAFTA has also expanded the opportunities for better international trade and commerce between the U.S., Mexico and other parts of the Spanish-speaking world.
