Why mountain ranges are still growing?
Some mountain ranges, such as the Himalayan Mountain Range are still growing because the tectonic collision that created them is still occuring. The rate of uplift exceeds the rate of erosion. Many mountain ranges, such as the Appalachian Mountains on the North American continent are a result on plate collisions that occured several hundred million years ago, and erosion has greatly eroded their height. At one time, the Appalachian Mountains were higher than Mount Everest, the current highest point on the planet’s surface.
