SunCoke Energy has been approved by the E.P.A. to construct a state-of-the-art, $340 million green-friendly coke plant in Middletown and SunCoke reached a 20-year agreement with AK Steel to provide its steel factory in Middletown with coke (which is needed to produce steel) from the new Middletown plant. The EPA Permit sets air pollution standards for a plant of three batteries totaling 100 green heat recovery coke ovens in south Middletown near the border with Monroe. BUT A SMALL GROUP IN MONROE AND ITS CITY COUNCIL HAVE HALTED THE CONSTRUCTION WITH THEIR NOT-IN-MY-BACKYARD MENTALITY! This group has filed a lawsuit that halts construction of the plant based on unfounded environmental concerns.
