Why not use frequencies spaced 5 KHz apart, the way most scanners tune?
Professional biologists do not normally utilize consumer receivers with 5 KHz channel spacing. They prefer narrower bandwidth receivers with product detectors, which provide greater sensitivity (and thus greater tracking range) than the popular scanners. This also gives them more usable frequencies in a given radio band.
