Why outlaw CFC propellants?
The article discusses the reasons of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for banning chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) propellants. CFCs are believed to decrease the stratospheric ozone layer, and absorb ultraviolet radiation that causes sunburn, skin cancer and photokeratitis. The World Health Organization estimates that 300,000 cases of nonmelanoma and 4,500 melanoma skin cancer will happen worldwide every year if the ozone depletes by 10 percent. Furthermore, the International Pharmaceutical Aerosol Consortium was established that identifies hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) as replacement for CFCs in inhalers.
