Why put all this effort into cats when dogs, habitat destruction and foxes cause a greater impact?
Because cats DO kill millions of wild animals each year and contribute significantly to wildlife losses AND because this is a problem we can all do something about. Aren’t foxes more significant wildlife predators than cats? Possibly. However, cat predation is a significant component of the overall toll on wildlife by introduced predators. When foxes are controlled feral cat numbers can build up and continue the damage caused by foxes. Action is also being taken against foxes (see LFW Note 24). Haven’t cat and native wildlife numbers reached a new equilibrium? No. Overall, wildlife numbers and species diversity continue to decline, and cats are a significant contributor to this trend.
