Why should organisms be assigned a scientific name?
Scientific names are used because the common names for things are often non-specific, or there may be more than one name for a particular animal. Scientific names provide clarity. Also, the scientific name helps you to know the classification of an organism by including the genus name (the first part of the scientific name). For example, all cats are given the denomination felinis, which identifies that lions and cougars are related to each other biologically.
